The helpline connects you to CalGETS, the state's gambling education and treatment program run by the California Department of Public Health's Office of Problem Gambling. Warning signs
- Spending more than you planned, or going back to win back what you lost.
- Borrowing, using bill money, or hiding how much you play.
- Feeling restless or irritable when you try to cut back.
- Gambling to escape stress, or losing sleep and time with people you care about.
Ban yourself from card rooms
California runs a voluntary self exclusion program for licensed card rooms through the Attorney General's Bureau of Gambling Control. Once enrolled, the card rooms in the program are asked to keep you off the gaming floor for the period you choose. See the self exclusion program.
Tribal casinos are not covered by that state program. Each tribe runs its own exclusion policy, so contact the security or guest services office at any tribal casino you want to be barred from.
Limits that work
- Decide on a loss limit before you leave home, and bring only that amount in cash.
- Leave cards at home, and skip the ATM on the casino floor.
- Set a phone alarm for when you will leave, and leave when it goes off, up or down.
- Never gamble to pay a debt, and never chase a loss.
