Terms to know
- Rally scoring
- Every rally wins a point for one team, whoever served.
- Win by two
- A set continues past 25 (or 15 or 21) until one team leads by 2.
- Deciding set
- The fifth set indoors or third set on the beach, played to 15.
- Indoor format
- Best of 5 sets to 25, the fifth to 15.
- Beach format
- Best of 3 sets to 21, the third to 15, with teams of two.
- Set handicap
- A start in sets given to the underdog, such as +1.5.
Common questions
Can a volleyball match end in a draw?
No. Every set is won by two points and the match continues until one team wins three sets indoors (two on the beach), so match winner markets have only two outcomes.
What does over 4.5 sets mean in volleyball?
That the indoor match goes to a fifth set, so it ends 3-2 either way. Under 4.5 wins on any 3-0 or 3-1.
How are volleyball total points counted?
Every point of every set played counts. A close match that goes five sets and has extra points at 24-24 can pass 200 points; a one sided 3-0 can finish well under 150.
Is volleyball betting legal in the US?
