Totals are worked out exactly over every possible rally sequence, with one fixed rally chance solved from the match odds, so a lopsided match ends quicker and with fewer points. Sportsbooks price totals with more information (team styles, serve strength), so a big gap between the model and the line is a reason to look closer, not proof of value.

Calculations show hypothetical outcomes from the prices you enter. They do not predict results, and betting always involves risk.

Worked example

For a -250 / +200 indoor match, the model expects about 174.7 total points and a favorite margin of about 6.4 points. The chance of over 180.5 points is 49.1% (fair +104), and of the favorite covering -6.5 points 55.1%.

Why closer matches have more points

Points come from sets, and close matches go to four or five sets and to extra points at 24-24. That is why total points and the match price are linked, and why the calculator needs the match odds rather than just the line.

Common questions

How many points are in a volleyball match?

It depends on how close it is. Under the model an evenly matched indoor match averages about 178 points, while a -250 / +200 match averages about 175, because one sided sets end sooner and fewer sets are played.

What is a points handicap in volleyball?

A handicap on the total points each team scores across the whole match. Team A -6.5 wins if Team A scores at least 7 more points than Team B over all the sets played.

Do totals include every set?

Match total points markets normally count the points of every set played. Set by set lines exist too; check which one the sportsbook is offering.

Why might the sportsbook's line differ from the model?

Sportsbooks use team styles, serve strength and recent matches. The model only knows the match odds, so treat a big gap as a reason to look closer.
