Implied team totals split the game total by the spread: the favorite's share is half of (total + points it's favored by). They describe what the lines imply, not a forecast.

Calculations show hypothetical outcomes from the prices you enter. They do not predict results, and betting always involves risk.

From the spread and total to a score

The spread is the expected margin and the total is the expected combined score, so together they imply a score for each team. A home team favored by 5.5 points in a game with a total of 220.5 implies about 113 to 107.5. In an American football game with a home underdog at +3 and a total of 47.5, the implied score is 22.25 to 25.25.

Team total markets are usually set close to these numbers, which makes the implied totals a quick check on whether a team total looks out of line.

Vig on the spread and the total

Enter the price on each side of the spread and the over/under to see the margin and the fair odds of every side. Lines move when one side is bet more, so the same game can show different vig on different lines and at different times.

Common questions

How do you get implied team totals from a spread and total?

Favorite's total = (game total + points it is favored by) / 2; underdog's total = game total minus that. A -5.5 favorite in a 220.5 total game implies 113 to 107.5.

What does a -5.5 spread mean?

The favorite has to win by 6 or more for a bet on it to win. A bet on the +5.5 underdog wins if the underdog wins outright or loses by 5 or fewer. Half points mean the spread can't push.

Does overtime count?

At most sportsbooks, full game spreads and totals include overtime in basketball and American football. Quarter and half markets usually don't. Check the sportsbook's rules for the market.

Why are both sides of a spread priced at -110?

The price includes the sportsbook's margin. At -110 on both sides the margin is about 4.5%, and the fair price of each side is +100. Use the price boxes to see it for any line.
